Bunk Beds

Matthew has had a strange bed situation for most of his life. He started life sleeping in a pack-n-play until he was almost 3 years old. After that, he moved into a toddler bed with a crib-sized mattress (actually the same toddler bed that his aunt Heidi slept in). The toddler bed fit him well at that point. Since then, he's really grown too big for that bed.

Matthew has been talking about getting bunk beds for a long time, letting us know that it would be perfect for him and Seth to share bunk beds once Seth is out of a crib. He also thought that he room would be perfect since the ceiling in their room is so high (they have the vaulted ceilings).

We finally caved in and got them bunk beds. Matthew went with Jon to pick up the set of three boxes. It took Jon longer than he thought to assemble them (he only had to disassemble it once to get it right), prolonging Matthew's excitement for a whole afternoon. But, the long wait was well worth it as Matthew is thrilled to be in his new bed:

As you can tell, he didn't wait for Seth to be out of the crib to take the top bunk. He went straight to the top:

He's even smiling in his sleep, or at least he can't keep a straight face while he fakes sleep for a picture:

We couldn't limit our picture taking that day to just Matthew. Later that night, Seth came up from our playroom with the play hot pads on his hands. He thought he was pretty cool:

He also brought up the play cupcakes, continually reminding that they were "hot". Hot is one of the handful of words that he can say, so he loves to say over and over.

Seth figured out a great oven for his cupcakes: the first step going upstairs from our kitchen. He even used the gate which used to keep him out of the stairs as his oven door.

It's a bit hard to see in that last picture, but he has a huge smile on his face. Seth somehow knows when he is being funny or creative, or when he is doing something to impress us. At any of those times, he gets a big smile on his face knowing that he is putting on a good show for us. It is amazing how a boy who knows how to voice only a few words can have such a developed personality and sense of humor.
