California Christmas 2011

We were all excited to escape to California for Christmas this year.  Jon braved a LONG car ride with the boys while Elyse and I flew.  These are some of the highlights:

Christmas Downtown

For a Saturday family adventure we headed downtown to take in the holiday sights!
First stop, the bus station.  Yes, the bus ride is always part of the adventure.  I'm still wondering when riding the bus will lose its allure.
Getting off at Westlake, we pressed through happy holiday crowds headed toward the gingerbread house display at the Sheraton.  I've wanted to take the boys to this ever since we moved to Seattle and it didn't disappoint.  Although, maybe next year we'll try to go during the day instead.  The wait was a little long.  Our favorite "houses"  were the Claymation Ruldolph one  and King's Cross Station, complete with a flying Harry Potter.

The wait at the houses cut our adventure a little short, but we did make it to Pacific Place in time to grab some dinner before it started "snowing."  So much fun!  I'm upset that I didn't catch any decent pictures of the snow.  There's always next year!

Then back on the bus, headed for home with our tired and excited-for-Christmas kids.

Elyse through the eyes of her brothers

Often when I lend out my phone to the boys it comes back with new pictures of Elyse.  I must admit that I'm pretty grateful that they capture these moments.  I'm certainly not doing a great job of documenting her life!  Poor third child!

Christmas Crafts

I've been attempted to do a few fun projects with the boys for Christmas.  Our crafting definitely has been a little sparse since Elyse arrived on the scene.  So, here are a couple of our attempts at Christmas crafts:

Even Uncle Jon joined in the fun!

Pac-12 Championship

It had been a while since Jon had been to game in Autzen stadium.  With USC under sanction, the Pac-12 championship game was slated to be pretty anti-climatic.  That, combined with the fact that the championship games were not part of the season ticket package for all season ticket holders, made ticket prices significantly less than regular Ducks tickets.  So, Jon jumped at the opportunity to take a road trip with the boys.

The game was on a Friday night and Jon knew he would not be able to drive to Eugene, go to a night game, and drive home all night long, so the boys got a hotel room that was closer to the stadium than most parking lots.  It was supposed to be a clear night, but very cold.  Unfortunately, all of the boys' warm clothes were not Duck colors, so Jon put one of his shirts over Matthew's coat and one of Julie's shirts over Seth's coat.  And, he couldn't help but buy them each an "O" beanie.

The kids loved seeing how big the stadium and the field were and they sat not too far away from the field even though they were in the corner.  The kids each learned something important about live football games: Matthew learned that the yellow "first and 10" line that you see on TV is not actually on the field and Sethie learned that football games take a lot longer when you can't fast forward through the DVR'd commercials and halftime.

The boys had a great time at the game.  They ate hot dogs, drank soda, ate a bag of caramel corn that was about as tall as Seth, raised their hands in the shape of an "O" all night, and froze their tails off all the way to a Ducks' victory.

After the game they walked back to their hotel and the kids had a warm bath to thaw out.  Jon had been concerned that bedtime would be a nightmare with all three of them in the same cramped hotel room, but the kids were snoring within minutes of laying down.

The next morning, they visited Aunt Mary and a few other relatives that we got to know well when we lived in Eugene before heading back to Seattle.  Even though we live in Husky country now, we still love our Ducks!

Pictures with Papa

Seth loves to take pictures with Jon.

These sleeping pictures never get old.
 I think they look alike!
